Hack a Walk

You know I love my walk. But every time I reach this point, I sigh heavily and gear myself up for the climb. What? You can't see the major hill? It must be my poor photography skills or perhaps just my poor fitness levels. But I think I stumbled on an interesting mind hack that could be a game changer. One of the podcasts I was listening to had a story about a marathoner who just narrowly focused on one thing ahead of her and did not take her eyes or concentration off of it until she passed it and then found another object to focus on and so on. So I gave it a try this morning. At first it was hard to keep my eyes on the target, but eventually I settled in. And although it was not exactly my usual enjoyable wandering philosophic walk, I did get here in record time and as promised by the podcast, it felt significantly shorter. This technique of a "narrow focus" can be used in all sorts of goal setting ways. Give it a try.

  1. A hill tip I've learned from my run club is to look down just slightly ahead of your feet and not at the top of the hill, that way you don't see the incline or how far you have to go. It tricks your brain into not getting so hung up on how hard you think the hill is going to be. I think it really works!
