Where the cold is

The temperature is now 15* outside on the dock.  Even though the boat is a relatively small place, its difficult to heat evenly.  This is because of how the boat is wired  (see previous "Heat Miser" post), where I can put heaters, and the structure of the boat itself.  For example, the bow of the boat (where the forward cabin is) is COLD, because its mostly out of the water, and it has the anchor locker, which is hard to insulate.

Using my fancy new laser temperature gun, here are some readings from around Betty.

  1. My guess is the reason it is difficult to heat evenly is more about convection, then where you can put a heater. Cold sinks, heat rises, and heat moves into cold--all the entropy stuff. Maybe some sort of baffles between each section of the boat would help. So some kind of air-door between the living room and galley that is air-tight. Same for back bedroom, and maybe something in front of upper door to deck. Otherwise, you play whack-a-mole with the heaters.

  2. Yeah I've been consulting with the neighbors too. Tricky stuff. Been doing some insulation too. An extra 20 amps in my power budget would come in handy but cest la vie.
